Some of the most important things in your home are also the most easy to forget about. Here is a simple checklist to help you stay on top of the basics.
Smoke detectors
Replace batteries at least once a year. If you hear that chirping sound, that means the battery is low. Most detectors should also be replaced completely every 10 years.
Carbon monoxide detectors
Every home with gas appliances, a gas furnace, or an attached garage should have a carbon monoxide detector. Replace batteries annually and test the unit monthly.
Air filters
HVAC air filters should be replaced every 1 to 3 months depending on your home. A clogged filter makes your system work harder and reduces air quality. Check yours today.
Other things worth checking:
- GFI outlets in bathrooms and kitchens (test the reset button)
- Stair handrails (make sure they are secure)
- Door and window locks (do they all work properly?)
- Exterior lights (any bulbs out?)
